A leader of Italy's gay movement for years, Luxuria has promised to use her position to fight for the rights of gays, transsexuals and unmarried couples.
Her reception in the parliament was not particularly warm. Only the leader of the communist party greeted her with a kiss on both cheeks.
Luxuria was born into a lower class family in southern Italy, one of five children of conservative parents.
For several years during her college career, Luxuria said she worked as a prostitute. She eventually gave it up to get involved in the world of show business.
Her latest movie, "Mater Natura," has just appeared in Italian theaters. The film is about a transvestite living in Naples who supports a candidate for parliament who wants to fight for gay and transsexual rights.
